Cries from China

For the past 30 years, the one-child policy has controlled the formation of families in China. This brutal policy has been wreaking havoc on Communist China’s women and babies.

Steven Mosher, president of the Population Research Institute, was the first American social scientist to visit mainland China in 1979. While there, he witnessed first-hand the atrocities of the new one-child policy. Regardless of the violent actions that have been taken and the tragedy that has occurred, China still believes that its one-child policy has been a success. But Steven notes that what the Chinese government fails to see is how the policy’s impact on the future of their economy could prove disastrous.

As the president of Women’s Rights Without Frontiers and a former asylum layer, Reggie Littlejohn has heard first-hand accounts of the brutality of the one-child policy. She has seen the devastating effect it has had on the women of China. Not only are women being forced to undergo abortion procedures, but the one-child policy has given rise to gendercide and sexual slavery within the country. With all of the violence and harm that has befallen women as a result of China’s one-child policy, it would be logical to see pro-choice women’s groups coming to their aid. But sadly, the cries of China’s women are going unnoticed by these groups.

Finding a Chinese woman to share her story regarding the one-child policy is extremely rare. We are grateful to have had the opportunity to sit down with Chinese native, Zhang Min. While living in China, Zhang was forced to undergo three abortions, all without anesthesia. She will always be haunted by the loss of her three children. Zhang Min’s bravery in sharing her story should inspire many more to come forward. As Americans, we have a history of caring for human rights issues and it’s our responsibility to speak out against China’s cruel one-child policy.
