Waiting For The Ring

The Associated Press and MTV conducted a survey of 1,280 people ages 13-24 to find out what makes this age group happy. When asked about sex the 13-17 year olds said sex leads to less happiness. The 18-24 year olds said it only leads to temporary happiness. If sex doesn’t bring lasting happiness, and sex outside of marriage can lead to STDs, unexpected pregnancy, and emotional turmoil, why does waiting until marriage to have sex have such a negative stereotype?

Author of The Truth About Guys, Chad Eastham, says he doesn’t even like the term “abstinence until marriage” because of that reason. He says, “It has very little to do with sex.” Chad explains, “We are talking about the opposite sex, understanding relationships, and really understanding how you act; and sexuality is one part of that.”

Dave Ashley, a peer speaker with Healthy Visions, says, “There are a lot of people out there who have chosen this lifestyle.”

Statement of content correction: this episode quotes the number of Americans living with an STD as 265 million.  According to the Centers for Disease Control, the number of people in America living with an STD is 65 million.
